Hosting the Perfect Dinner Party: A Drinks Strategy

Hosting a dinner party involves juggling food, conversation, and drinks. With a solid drinks strategy, you'll keep guests happy and avoid stress. The key is planning ahead so you can actually enjoy your own party rather than constantly playing bartender.

Start with an aperitif. When guests arrive, offer something light and celebratory—Prosecco, a simple cocktail, or a glass of wine. This sets the tone and gives people something to hold while they mingle. Have this ready before guests arrive so you're not frantically mixing drinks when the doorbell rings.

For a three-course dinner, plan to serve wine with the meal. A white wine works for fish or lighter courses; red for meat. A rosé is versatile if you're unsure. Buy slightly more than you think you'll need—it's better to have leftovers than to run out. A general rule is one bottle per two people, but this varies based on drinking habits.

Timing matters. Don't pour wine until guests are seated and ready to eat. Serve water alongside wine—many guests appreciate the option. Change glasses between courses if serving different wines, or keep the same glass and rinse it with water.

After dinner, offer digestifs or coffee. A simple selection of spirits and liqueurs means guests can choose what appeals to them. Brandy, port, or a coffee-based drink are classic options. Have these available but don't push them aggressively.

Practical tips: Chill white wine and Prosecco beforehand in the fridge or a bucket of ice. Open red wine 15-20 minutes before serving to let it breathe. Have enough glasses for each course—you need at least eight if serving eight people to account for water glasses and wine glasses.

Consider your guests' preferences. Ask when inviting if anyone is teetotal or prefers non-alcoholic options. Always have quality soft drinks, sparkling water, and juice available. Never make someone feel uncomfortable for not drinking alcohol.

Keep the bar simple. Avoid attempting complicated cocktails when you're also hosting dinner. Stick to wine, beer, and basic spirits. Your guests are there for food and conversation, not because they expect you to be a professional mixologist.

Finally, don't get so focused on drinks that you neglect the food or your guests. A relaxed host makes for a relaxed party. Plan everything so you can sit down, eat, and enjoy the evening with the people you've invited.
