Building a home bar doesn't require hundreds of bottles. Instead, focus on a curated selection of quality spirits that form the foundation of classic cocktails. With just a few key bottles, you'll be able to make the vast majority of drinks you'll encounter.
The core four spirits every home bar needs are vodka, gin, rum, and whiskey. These are the base spirits for countless cocktails. For vodka, choose something smooth and neutral—it doesn't need to be the most expensive option. Gin should be a London Dry style, which works in nearly every gin cocktail. For rum, get both a light white rum and a darker aged rum to cover different drinks. Whiskey is broad, but start with a decent bourbon or rye.
Beyond the core four, consider adding tequila if you enjoy margaritas, and brandy for more sophisticated cocktails. These five spirits will cover around 80% of classic cocktail recipes.
Quality over quantity is essential. It's better to have one excellent bottle of gin than three mediocre ones. Look for brands that are well-regarded and have consistent quality. You don't need premium top-shelf bottles for home use, but avoid the cheapest options.
Don't forget the supporting players. You'll need quality vermouth—both dry and sweet—for martinis and Manhattans. A good quality tonic water, ginger beer, and cola are essential mixers. Fresh citrus juice is crucial; never use bottled lemon or lime juice if you can avoid it.
Storage matters. Keep spirits in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. A kitchen cupboard away from the oven is ideal. Most spirits last indefinitely if stored properly, so you can build your collection gradually over time.
Start with the basics and expand based on what you actually drink. There's no point buying expensive Cognac if you never make Sidecars. Visit a good independent drinks shop where staff can recommend bottles based on your preferences, rather than buying online without tasting.
